The goal of mathematics education is to develop students’ abilities in communication, inquiry, estimation, logical reasoning, and problem-solving through the study of mathematics. It aims to cultivate a strong sense of numeracy, instill correct values, and establish a solid foundation for lifelong learning in mathematics. We hope that upon completing the subject, students will be able to apply mathematics accurately to solve problems and make decisions, appreciate the rigor of mathematical operations and the beauty of mathematical patterns, and meet the basic mathematical requirements for further studies.

A variety of teaching approaches are commonly used in mathematics instruction. Teachers at our school integrate different teaching and learning strategies to cater to students’ needs, interests, abilities, and prior knowledge.

Previewing is an essential part of learning. In mathematics teaching, appropriate preview activities can lead to different instructional outcomes. Reviewing prerequisite knowledge related to new topics helps assess students’ readiness. Using new topic questions directly as preview material can stimulate thinking and foster self-learning habits. When preparing to teach extended questions in the next lesson, simpler parts can be assigned for preview to give students an initial understanding. Previewing can also be incorporated into the “flipped classroom” model to guide students in independent learning.

In this new era of rapid technological advancement and information explosion, traditional lecturing may not always yield optimal results. E-learning strategies are useful supplementary methods. Teachers use various apps in class to facilitate presentation, interaction, and flipped learning. In addition to existing online resources, our school has developed a customized online practice platform to provide tailored support for students.

To address learning diversity, teachers may adopt cooperative learning strategies during lessons. These range from simple pair work for answer checking and think-pair-share discussions, to more structured four-person group tasks, and even complex jigsaw models, depending on the needs.

The Mathematics Department also emphasizes autonomous learning. Teachers guide students to reflect on the most meaningful parts of each lesson based on their own abilities. Through previewing and note-taking, students develop the ability to learn independently and tackle preview questions, paving the way for self-directed learning.

Our mathematics teachers are passionate about teaching and actively participate in professional development activities. The department has also engaged in various school-based support programs, such as the ” Partnership for Improvement of Learning and Teaching(PILT)Project” by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the ” Supporting the Learning and Teaching of Mathematics for NCS Students in Secondary Schools” by The University of Hong Kong, and the Education Bureau’s school-based support services. These collaborations aim to improve teaching effectiveness and student performance through expert advice.

Four teachers from our department were recognized in the “2014 Outstanding Teacher Election” under the “Teaching Research – Lesson Plan” category, affirming the team’s dedication and efforts.

Looking ahead, the department will continue to strive for excellence, adopt innovative teaching models, enhance learning motivation, and foster greater interest in mathematics for even better student outcomes.
