The Church of Christ in China Kwei Wah Shan College was founded in 1977 by Mr. Kwei Wah Shan, a successful Filipino Chinese entrepreneur. The school was renowned for its strict discipline of students as well as their excellent academic results. Many graduates continued to study at prominent local and overseas universities.
Located at the intersection of Cloud View Road and Braemar Hill Road, the campus commanded spectacular views of Victoria Harbour and the surrounding hills of Choi Sai Woo Park. It occupied 60,000 square feet and there were two main blocks. One of them was named “Dr. Hui Ling Lee Memorial Hall” after Dr. Hui Ling Lee who was Mrs. Kei. She passed away in 1970. Mr. Kwei made the donation in remembrance of his late wife, Dr. Lee.
Dr. Lee was a remarkable lady. She graduated from the famous Peking Union Medical College before the Second World War. The outstanding doctor went to Manila after graduating and strived to serve the community using her medical knowledge. The poor could receive free medical advice while the more affluent could pay what they were comfortable with. There was always a long queue outside the clinic because of Dr. Lee’s medical skills. Mr. Kwei was very curious about this lady. Gradually, he paid attention to her, admired her and became her suitor. Finally, they fell in love and tied the knot.
After the Second World War, the distinguished couple Mr. and Mrs. Kwei returned to Hong Kong. The couple expanded their business interests in both the banking and hotel industries. They were both invited Tung Wah Group of Hospitals and Po Leung Kuk to act as Directors.
Mr. Kwei wanted to contribute especially to education because he did not have any opportunities to study in school during his childhood. He had established an overseas Chinese school in the Philippines to promote Chinese Education. Besides in June 1971 the “Dr. Hui Ling Lee Memorial Fund” was established. The fund was established to finance one graduate every year from the Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong. Moreover, Mr. Kwei, through his generosity, established a “Dr. Hui Ling Lee Memorial Ward” in both the Hong Kong Adventist Hospital and the United Christian Hospital.
Thereafter Mr. Kwei made a contribution to the Hong Kong Council of the Church of Christ in China. This contribution was used to fund the construction Kwei Wah Shan College on the piece of land which was procured by the Church of Christ in China from the government. After the hillside site situated on Cloud View Road was formatted, the construction of the buildings began and was completed in the spring of 1977. The school was named the Church of Christ in China Kwei Wah Shan College and classes started in the autumn of 1977. At the beginning, the college was a private non-profit making secondary school. Later, it became a government subsidized school and received a subsidy equivalent to a Government School.
The school was equipped with international standard facilities which included 30 classrooms, 11 special rooms, a library, laboratories and computer room. It offered seven Forms: six classes in each junior Form from Form One to Form Three ; four classes in each senior Form from Form Four and Form Five; two classes in each matriculation course (both one-year and two-year curriculums) from Form Six and Form Seven. Graduates could apply for both The University of Hong Kong and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. After continuous improvement and development, the school was committed to providing quality education in the moral, intellectual, physical, social and aesthetic spheres as well as to nurture them into responsible citizens under Christian principles.
